Redwork is experiencing renewed interest from embroiderers and quilters alike. Traditionally, Penny Squares were worked on 8" muslin squares with Turkey red cotton thread from Europe. The squares were worked by children and sold for 1 penny apiece--thus the name Penny Squares! In the 1880's, squares in the same quilt focused on various themes, but not in sets. Sets appeared more often in the early 1900's. Later, this work was also done in blues.

Today, we use 2 strands of DMC thread to give the same look as the original Turkey thread. One strand is used for all fine details in the embroidery.

We will be listing the appropriate floss, muslin, and red or blue fabrics for recreating these charming squares and quilts. Come back to this page often to check out new additions to books, patterns and materials.
