Materials:
- " Poly cotton fabric or ready-made sweatshirt or t-shirt
(I used Stretch and Sew 199 to make mine).
- " Thread to match the fabric
- " Pillow panel or fabric with a large design or designs
- " Pins
Optional:
- " Jewels, fabric paints, other materials for embellishing
Helpful, but not required:
- " Water soluble spray fabric adhesive
- " "Stuff-It" tool
- " Applique Scissors
- " Open toe presser foot
Procedure:
- Cut out the fabric for the inside applique leaving about 1/2" beyond the part of the design that will be in the window. You may use large or smaller designs, but the more simple the shape, the easier it is to do the technique. "Clean finish" the shapes (or with smaller designs, put Fray Check on after sewing and trimming).
- If using an adhesive spray, follow the directions on the can for a temporary bond and treat the FRONT of the appliques. If not, you'll pin them in place.
- For a pillow panel, put the fabric on the inside of the shirt, right side of panel to wrong side of shirt, centered from side to side. You may also take parts of a panel to put inside the sleeve for additional decoration, always RIGHT side of applique to WRONG side of shirt. With other designs, put them creatively around the shirt, of course avoiding "headlights" on women's shirts.
- Stitch from the wrong side of the shirt. (Leave a ready-made shirt right side out to stitch from the inside.) You can use a straight stitch or a tiny zig zag. You can stitch right on the lines of the design, or a little outside it you want to have the knit fabric cut a little farther from the stitching to have it bloom after washing. (Sweatshirts bloom more than t-shirts.) Everywhere you stitch within the design will make a little line of the knit fabric when you cut away the knit. Look at it a little to plan before you start stitching.
- When all your stitching is done, go to the right side. If you feel more comfortable (with a complicated design where you're not cutting out all the parts), mark the areas on the front you want to cut out. Pull the knit up in one of those sections, away from the applique, and snip in the middle. If you've used the spray adhesive, the "Stuff-It" tool is helpful for poking into corners and separating the two layers of the fabric. Clip to the corners of rectangles, and then cut next to straight lines. If you want blooming, cut 1/4" - 1/2" from stitching. If not, you may cut as close as 1/8" from the stitching.
- Add jewels with a jewel glue, or dimensional paints, or additional embellishments with fabric paints or dyes. Use your imagination and let the fabric help tell you what to do. One of the reasons we sew is to have and give special items that we don't see everywhere else. And, above all, have fun!
