Usage chart for needlework: Canvas size and which needle to use, and which yarn or thread to use. This chart is based on continental or basketweave stitches. Other stitches may require thicker or thinner fibers.
Canvas Gauge	Needle Size	Yarn or thread (in strands)
7 count	16	5 strands of persian
10 count	18	3 strands of persian or 1 of tapestry
12 count	20	2 strands of persian, 1 of tapestry, 5 or 6 of crewel, or size 3 perle
14 count	20 or 22	2 strands of persian, 6 to 9 of floss, 5 of crewel, or size 3 perle
16 count	22	1 strands of persian, 4 to 7 of floss, 4 of crewel, or size 5 perle
18 count	22 or 24	1 strands of persian, 3 to 5 of floss, 3 of crewel, or size 5 perle
