We believe we really do need things such as images from a magazine, scraps of fabric, snippets of paper, colorful jars of buttons, to spark creativity and fuel imagination. Having a variety and abundance of art-making materials at one's fingertips makes the creative juices flow. The evidence is quite clear in the beautiful gallery of ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) in this issue. Where else can you see a gallery of mixed-media fiber art that incorporates so many different materials?

When we think of our own deadlines, we are reminded of the many opportunities we all have to start fresh with a clean slate. Not only is the end of the year holiday crunch in full swing on both the home and work fronts, but our studios seem to have a backup of projects as well. So as 2013 approaches and we make plans for the new year, we'll remember that sometimes life just happens. We look forward to opportunities to reach out to others.

Every embellishment has its place and the rest of our stash is just as important as the beads. The editor considers her collections of vintage milliner's leaves, hand-dyed embroidery floss, yards of rickrack, metal foil, and paper ephemera to be like the columns of a Greek building: each performs a necessary function and adds to the work in its own special way. There was quite a bit of buzz around the offices when the shipments arrived containing the art for this issue.
