French Inspirations for Artful Hands (Book) by Bonnie Sullivan & Kathy Schmitz From Kathy: For almost a month in September, my sister Bonnie Sullivan and I traveled through the French countryside. We went wherever our hearts led and were inspired with each turn of the road. Every boxwood garden, ancient concrete urn, stone stairwell and stained glass window inspired a design for the projects in this book. From the dove carving on the top of a building in the Marqueyssac Gardens, we designed our own interpretation and came up with two sweet three dimensional wool birds. The Eiffel Tower and surrounding gardens inspired the Ville De Paris quilt with pieced blocks and applique vines and bird. You will also find travel necessities to make for your next adventure; shoe sachets and cozy to keep your shoes (and suitcase) smelling nice, a jewelry roll to safely transport your rings and things. Warm woolen slippers to pamper your toes after a long day of sight seeing. The directions for all of projects are in full color and many with step by step photos and illustustrations. We also stepped outside of the "quilting" box a bit and included a few paper crafting ideas. Throughout the antique stores and flea market we picked up antique letters, paintings, menus, etchings and about anything else we could get our hands on. We've scanned in the best images for you to use behind glass paper weights, in pendants for necklaces, and even images to use in making a miniature flower press to take on your next trip. Enjoy! Sashiko Style Traditional Japanese Patterns for Contemporary Design Sashiko is a traditional and distinctive form of embroidery characterized by running stitches ("little stabs") typically in white thread on indigo-blue fabric. Originally used by Japanese farmers to quilt together several layers of fabric for warmth and durability, sashiko patterns are increasingly being adapted as decorative elements in contemporary designs and needlecraft projects. Sashiko Style presents 70 different patterns of three types: linear, curvy and single-stitch ("hitome zashi") patterns. Full-color photos showcase the many different ways in which the patterns can be used to make beautiful and useful items such as napkins, tablecloths, placemats and runners; tote bags; pillows; curtains and wall hangings. The book introduces basic skills that even beginners can master and includes detailed equipment lists with photos, as well as step-by-step instructions for pattern drafting. A special feature of Sashiko Style is the handy, pullout pattern template insert. Product Details: Softcover, Color, 8 1/2 x 11", 80 pages. 40831 $17.95 Click on image at left for larger view
