Note from Bright Ideas in Braid Crafts Book: Make a short test braid to determine the right width strips for the specific fabric type and project. Wider strips appear softly gathered when braided, and narrow ones look flatter. The width ranges between 1 1/4" to 8" wide. Generally, the thinner the fabric, the wider the strip should be. The ideal size of a completed braid for most projects is 3/8" to 3/4" thick and 3/4" to 1 1/2" wide.
